Popular Roof Types to Choose for Your Home
It might be time to upgrade your roof because you’ve noticed signs that your roof has gone bad, or you’re just looking to update the exterior of your home for cosmetic reasons. Either way, there is plenty to consider when choosing a new roof, especially when it comes to the type and shape. Here are four of the most popular roof styles available to you.
Flat Roof
The flat roof is one of the least expensive options because of its simplicity. It’s easier to build a house with a flat roof because it eliminates the need for perpendicular or parallel walls. But because they have no slope at all, they are harder to maintain because they are likely to accumulate debris and water, causing more wear and tear. You would only want to choose this type of roof if you live in a dry climate.
Gambrel Roof
You’ll have seen a gambrel roof on most barn-style homes. With a sloping roof that looks more ridged and curved rather than triangular, it is similar to a gable roof with the exception that one side is steeper than the other. It may be slightly costlier because of the extra slopes.
Hip Roof
If your home is smaller, you may consider a hip roof, which consists of four slopes that are elevated and joined together. The slopes don’t meet in a single point but rather connect to a flat plane. The hip roof is also a good choice if you are trying to be a little more economical with your budget.
Sloping or Skillion Roof
If you’re looking for a dramatic exterior, you may want to go with a sloping roof. A sloping roof is also good because it doesn’t allow water or debris to collect on top because the sharp angle allows everything to slide down to the gutters.
The skillion roof is a striking version of a sloping roof because it has an even sharper angle and is usually only one slope. It’s a good option for a multilevel home, as it will make the home feel even bigger.
